The history of Islam, from both Sunni and Shia sources narrates that, Ali Ibn Abi Talib (A.S.), the cousin and the closest companion of the Prophet Muhammad (P.B.U.H.) was recognized, with the exception of the Prophet’s (P.B.U.H.) persona, as the most commanding figure of Islam. After the Prophet’s (P.B.U.H.) demise, he remained until his own martyrdom the single most powerful personality that influenced Islam and Muslims. He enlightened the world through his masterful manifesto “Nahaj ul Balagha” (The Peak of Eloquence). His sermons, as well as his numerous deliberations, are enshrined in the body politic of both religious and worldly matters. He possessed “ilm-e-Ladunni” (Knowledge, bestowed only by God, Almighty). While the Prophet of Islam bore the honour of being “the City of knowledge”, Ali Ibn Abi Talib (A.S.) was designated as its gate. He was the undisputed king of both Razm (Battlefield) and Bazm (Intellectual forum).
During his tenure as Secretary General of the United Nations, Kofi Annan circulated copies of a letter that Ali Ibn Abi Talib (A.S.) had directed to the attention of Maalek Al-Ashtar, his Governor of Egypt, advising him that the laws of governance and its implementation must be carried out in a fair and forthright manner. Also, Mr. Annan suggested that certain member States as well as various arms of the United Nations emulate, both in text and tone, every single aspect of this document with respect to the daily management of their respective organizations.
After the deaths of the Holy Prophet (P.B.U.H.) and his companions, Ali Ibn Abi Talib (A.S.) reluctantly took over the helm of Islam as the last Caliph and the first Imam of the believers. It did not take long for his enemies from the clan of Banu Ummayya to cut him and his two sons Hassan (A.S.) and Hussain (A.S.) down. The most horrific tragedy of Karbala, known as “Zibh-e-Azeem”, saved and secured Islam for ever. The Al-Khawarij and Banu Abbas clans inflicted a tremendous amount of turmoil and tragedy against the Progeny of the Prophet, as eleven out of twelve Imams belonging to the family of the prophet faced martyrdom of one sort or another at the hands of their enemies. The modern day acts of terror and tyranny does, indeed, have its roots in what transpired almost 1400 years ago.
Ibn Tammeyya, a 13th century demagogue , and much later after him, Mohammad Ibn Abdul-Wahab, the 17th century religious provocateur, concocted and maliciously introduced the most distorted and deleterious interpretations of Islam. They claimed that the Islam being practiced at the time was not pure, and invoking the names of their Aslaf (Fore-bearers), they demanded that unless fellow Muslims agree to follow their version of Islam, those Muslims be declared Kafir (Infidels). Henceforth, these Salafites were able to attract the disciples from the monarchies of Saudi Arabia, Bahrain, Kuwait, Qatar and the United Arab Emirates. This bunch of Salafis and Wahhabis, that has become the darling of the Western powers because of their Petro-wealth, has been forcing their warped version of Islam down the throats of other Muslims, while perpetrating on a global scale all of the bloodshed and destruction of contemporary times.
Due to their built-in bias about Islam, caused solely by these most evil elements that have been, for decades, spreading the extremist Wahhabi and Salafi doctrines across the globe, the incoming leadership at the U.N. and in the U.S. did not pay much attention to this letter; much less understand its true meaning and its real essence. This document not only personifies Ali Ibn Abi Talib (A.S.) as a fair and formidable leader of his time, but also makes a solemn and sincere statement about the mindset of a Muslim leadership that was possessed with a divine belief that justice, freedom and peace is, indeed, an ultimate prerequisite to rule a citizenry; be it Muslims or people of other faiths. Sadly, the gullible and poorly informed Western powers refuse to wake-up to the reality that the Islam as it was preached and practiced by the Holy Prophet and his endeared progeny (Ali Ibn Abi Talib (A.S.) is the head of that progeny) is the real Islam, and not the one that is being espoused and propagated by their Wahhabi and Salafi Arab allies!
